Paul states the problem is division in the church and reasons for it. Paul reiterates the wisdom and power of God in 1:27-29 "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him." It appears that pride is also an issue in the church.
Chapter 2 is very interesting because Paul admits that he was in weakness, fear and with much trembling when he came to speak to them. Apparently, the church rested on man's wisdom and not God's (using persuasive words).
